What is ADR?

The acronym ADR stands for Automated Dialogue Replacement. It is the process by which an actor ( either featured on screen or off screen ) records dialogue that relates to the image.

There are three main types of ADR -

  • Individual actor ADR - This is where the actor re-records their dialogue (existing or additional) in the ADR studio for technical or performance reasons. These ADR sessions are focused on one actor per session and usually attended by the Director and the Dialogue Editor.

  • Revoice - ReVoice ADR is where a different actor's voice is used in place of the original performance. This type of ADR can be required when the Director and / or the Producer, or the film studio executives decide that the actor used visually supports the on-screen character, but for various reasons their voice doesn't support the performance.

  • Group - Professional voice actors are used to create certain environments. Actors are recorded in large or small groups and this type of ADR is recorded when there are scenes that contain a lot of background supporting actors (extras). The only useable production dialogue recorded during filming will be of the principle actors.
